Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) and Permanent Canadian Residence
Once they complete their academic or learning program, international students may be allowed to work and stay in Canada with a work permit. Following the verification of their PGWP application, an applicant can work in the country for any period between eight and twenty-four months.
If the aim is to seek permanent residence in Canada, employment experience achieved through a PGWP gives an individual an added advantage when they want to settle permanently in the country via the Express Entry system.
The Express Entry immigration program caters for foreigners who wish to work and stay in Canada under the three main economy-centric immigration programs. They include the following:
- Federal Skilled Worker Program
- Federal Skilled Trades Program
- Canadian Experience Class
All the above programs have separate requirements that foreigners need to meet. To be eligible for the Express Entry immigration policy, one needs to pass an assessment to determine that they fit to be added to the Canadian workforce. Some critical tenets that go into the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) include the candidate’s age, fluency in the official language, education level, and their work experience, etc.
After this stage, applicants who attain higher CRS rating receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residency in Canada after entering the Express Entry initiative. One thing that candidates to focus on is working in Canada because it is this experience that increases your chances of passing an Express Entry draw.
