Good news for prospecting permanent residents of Canada this year! The latest Express Entry draw saw 4,800 candidates receive invitations to apply, providing individuals from all walks of life with a fair and transparent opportunity to secure permanent residency. Besides transforming the immigration process, Canada’s Express Entry system highlights Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada’s efforts to attract skilled individuals worldwide. Continue reading to explore how this system works and what it means for aspiring immigrants.

All-Program Draw: A Fair Selection Process

The Express Entry system evaluates candidates based on language proficiency, education, work experience and age. This comprehensive system ranks the candidates on a merit-based system that ensures individuals with the skills and qualifications most in demand by the Canadian labor market stand the greatest chance of receiving invitations to apply for permanent residency.

All-Program Draws and Program-Specific Draws

Prospecting candidates can enter the Express Entry draws in two ways:

1.All-program draw
This program considers candidates from the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) and the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)

2.Program-specific draw
This program considers specific programs and categories within Express Entry to address unique labor market needs.

However, there is an expected paradigm shift in the selection process. For instance, IRCC is scheduled to introduce draws targeting specific attributes of Express Entry candidates instead of the overreliance on high CRS scores. The passing of Bill C-19, receiving Royal Assent in June 2022, granted the immigration minister the power to invite candidates who can best contribute to Canada’s economic goals.
