Why Work Permits Should be Processed Quickly
There were almost 900,000 jobs available in Canada a few months back in November 2021, according to recent reports. Immigration is considered a way of ensuring more of these roles are fulfilled and businesses don’t suffer.
Employers working in certain sectors have expressed their need for skilled foreign workers, allowing some applications for work permits to be fast-tracked. The Global Talent Streams is in support and allows for a 10 day processing time for immigrant employees to be welcomed into the tech sector.
Quebec offers a list of jobs where the employer is exempt from advertising requirements set out by the Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA). This allows for faster processing times without the need to advertise.
The LMIA is responsible for employing some foreign nationals. However, they still require more LMIAs to fulfill the position. Roughly one-quarter of work permits granted last year required an LMIA which demonstrates their importance.
Staying in Canada
Employees can extend their stay in Canada by completing their application before their work permit expires. They can still follow the working guidelines as laid out in their work permit, as long as they remain in Canada during processing. Study permit holders can also apply to remain, as well as visitors who entered temporarily but wish to stay longer.
