In the second quarter of 2019, Canada managed to welcome an overwhelming number of international travelers who summed up to 8.8 million. The highest number of visitors came from the United States of America. This is equivalent to 76.8% of the total visitors. There was a growth in total spending by visitors in the second quarter of 2019 compared to the same duration of 2018.
In the second quarter of 2019, the total expenditures amounted to 6.3 billion dollars compared to 5.8 million dollars in the second quarter of 2018. The increase in spending was triggered by the rise in spending by US visitors, which was an increase of 10.7%. Tourists all over the US have been visiting Canada for different reasons ranging from leisure, recreation purposes, for holidays and business trips, among others.
In the second quarter of 2019, the trips to Canada from the US were topped by people who came for leisure, holidays and recreational purposes. This was approximately 3 million trips and 44% of the total trips from the United States residents. Those who went to Canada to visit family and friends from the United States made 1.3 million trips which were equivalent to 19.5 % of the total trips from the US residents to Canada. Visiting family and friends came as a second reason for visiting Canada below leisure, holidays and recreational purposes.
The total amount that the US residents spent during their travelling to Canada summed up to 3.3 billion dollars, which is an increase compared to the same period in the second quarter of 2018, which was 2.8 billion dollars. On average, the expenditure per trip by the US residents was 486 dollars.
In terms of percentage on average expenditure per trip was 9.4% on entertainment and recreation, 17.1% on transportation within Canada, 25.9% on food and beverage and 39.5% on accommodation. This was the highest in the list of expenditures.
