New Rules for Changing Schools

There are new rules for changing schools in addition to the work hours. You can no longer change your school without applying for a new study permit. This means that students thinking of changing their designated learning institutions must get approved. Before the change, students were allowed to change schools on the same study permit. They were only required to update their IRCC online account with the new information.

Currently, students can initiate the DLI change by submitting a letter of acceptance. You can only change to a school categorized as a Designated Learning Institution. When applying for a new study permit, there are two requirements. You must explain why you are changing schools and provide proof that you meet the set criteria.

According to the IRCC, the changes will help enrol students in legitimate programs. This aims to further strengthen the integrity of the international student program. If you change your designated learning institute without a permit, it may be revoked. Violating the study permit conditions can affect your temporary residence status in Kenya.

The previous 20-hour working limit was temporarily lifted during the pandemic. This allowed students to work for up to 40 hours per week. Consequently, students were able to address labor shortages in Canada while earning extra income. This policy ended on April 30, 2024, bringing the 20-hour rule back.
