Working is a requirement for international students in Canada to complete study programs. A job allows students to support themselves, gain work experience, and build a professional network. Over the years, international students in Canada have been working for 20 hours weekly. Recently, the Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada, Mark Miller, announced new regulations. The new rule offers an additional two hours. It allows students to work for up to 24 hours weekly off-campus during classes. This new rule was first announced in April 2024 and took effect from November 15th.

Uncapped Hours for Foreign Nationals on Study Permits

The working restrictions apply to the hours that students work off-campus during academic sessions. You can work as much as you want on campus and during academic term breaks. This allows you to engage in full-time work opportunities during winter or summer holidays. For international students, this offers more time to earn cash while studying.

Why the Change?

According to Miller, the 24-hour cap achieves the perfect work-study balance for students. International students can manage their finances without interfering with their academic performance. The balance allows students to focus on their education and achieve valuable work experience. It further helps the country’s economy by addressing the Canadian labor shortages. The increase in work hours aligns with Canada’s aim to improve temporary resident programs.
