In a statement released by the Immigration Minister, Ahmed Hussein, the changes made aim at fulfilling their promise to the Canadians and developing an asylum system which is fair and efficient for most vulnerable people in the world. He added that the new asylum system would be more beneficial to all people, especially refugees and the Canadian population. As such, former DCO seekers are awaiting the decision of their claims from the Immigration and Refugee Board as they can do nothing presently. Therefore, the Board will continue processing their demands despite the changes made.
Between 2013 and 2019, the asylum system claims generated by DCO populations exemplified about twelve percent of the total number. As to magnify the space of the asylum system while minimizing the IRB waiting period, Canada announced the allocation of $208 million in the 2019 budget of its spending. The Canada Asylum System is presently at its saturation point after over forty thousand unauthorized and undocumented immigrants crossing the border from the United States to Canada between 2017 and 2018.
In 2019, the country saw a decrease in the number of immigrants in the first quarter an indication of an improvement in border patrol. The situation arises after about four thousand immigrants were captured while crossing the border illegally without the necessary documents within the first quarter of 2019. On April, the country saw a significant number of border crossers from the United States where more than one thousand immigrants were intercepted. However, the amount reduced by more than half when compared to April last year where more than two thousand five hundred people were seized crossing the border.
