A Step-by-Step Guide on How to Find Your CIP Code

So, you are a beginner trying to determine if your educational program is eligible for a PGWP. Do not fret. You only need to have the official title of your instructional program to locate its CIO code. Here is a quick guide to help you through:

  1. Visit the Statistics Canada webpage for the 2021 CIP
  2. You can either search for the keywords relating to your program for a quick search or explore the available field of study by browsing the links in the main table.
  3. Using either of the methods, you will be directed to another table featuring various subcategories for every field of study. Select one that best suits your program.
  4. If unsure which sub-category fits field of study, click on the display definitions feature to get a clearer idea about every category, then choose the most applicable.
  5. Finally, navigate the last table featuring in-depth details about instructional programs in the chosen category. Still unsure? Click on the “display definitions” feature to learn more about each program then click through the relevant program to view its descriptions and exclusions.

The last page provides valuable and detailed information about each program including descriptions, examples and exclusions. Keep in mind that the instructional programs are quite broad featuring a range of educational streams. That said, you must be careful when choosing and pay keen attention to the program descriptions when picking the correct CIP code.

New Language Requirements for PGWP Applicants

Besides the reviewed and updated field of study requirements, IRCC has announced a new language criterion for international graduates looking for PGWP. However, these requirements vary depending on the applicant’s level of study. If you are applying for your post-graduation work permit before November 1st you do not need to meet the revised field of study criteria, they still need to meet the language proficiency requirement.
