In general, Transport Canada statistics issued a series of estimates in March this year, which pertain to “projected labor shortfalls throughout the transportation sector” for the next 12 years.
- Trucking (25,000 to 55,600 by 2023-2035)
- Aviation (42,000 to 55,000 by 2025-2035)
- Marine (1,000 to 19,000 by 2031-2035)
- Rail (4,000 by 2035).
Put in tandem, all of this information implies that Canada will require thousands of new transportation professionals in the future years.
What Opportunities Does This Create For Prospective Canadian Immigrants?
For newcomers to Canada, the country’s obvious desire to attract transportation vocation professionals gives a plethora of job prospects for those with prior experience in these fields.
In the same vein, immigrants who come to Canada through the IRCC’s Express Entry category-based lottery for transport occupation employees are likely to find lots of opportunities to develop long and satisfying careers.
Furthermore, transportation occupations tend to provide a competitive wage in this nation, which is something that all Canadians–particularly newcomers to this country–strive for given the ever-increasing cost of living.
According to Statistics Canada (StatCan) data reported in 2021, the median income for economic immigrant primary applicants in 2019 was $43,600. This averages out to $20.96 per hour (supposing full-time employment). At the same time, according to StatsCan data quoted this year by the Toronto Star, “the average hourly pay of a long-haul truck driver in Canada is $27.80.”
Transport vocations, effectively, not only provide work prospects for new immigrants to Canada, but they also provide rich compensation.
History Of Transport Express Entry Draws To Date
Canadian immigration candidates are eligible for Express Entry due to qualifying recent work experience in a transportation occupation.
It was the latest category-based draw for an occupational category held by IRCC, and it happened on September 20, 2023.
The immigration service granted 1,000 Invitations to Apply (ITAs) for permanent residence in Canada to Express Entry candidates having a minimum CRS score of 435.
These IRCC statistics highlighted that category-based draws for persons with prior work experience in certain fields would amount to “one to two” percent of all ITAs issued through Express Entry for the remainder of 2023.
