2. Field of study

When discerning employment rate in terms of field of study, an immigrant that has studied engineering has fewer chances of getting employed compared to a Canadian counterpart. The research done by Statistics Canada indicates that such immigrants’ employment rate was 48%. Unlike immigrants, Canadian-born people had a much higher rate, which is 66%. The recognition of foreign credentials from immigrants faces more difficulty.

Nonetheless, immigrants and Canadian-born individuals with a computer science degree had similar possibilities of getting employed. The rate of immigrants stood at 32% while that of Canadian-born folks was 30%. Also, 54% of immigrants with a science degree were employed in STEM occupations. Here, Canadian-born professionals who work in STEM occupations stood at 57%.

The second study sensually sensitized the changes that occurred in the education-occupation match for recent immigrants and Canadian youth aged 25-34. This study covered periods from 2001-2016 when Canada was experiencing a massive supply of university-educated-workers. From the survey, employment growth among Canadian-born youth stood at 60% compared to that of immigrants, which was at 30%. The study explicitly focused on jobs that would require a degree to get employed. According to the study, immigrant workers with jobs that at least needed a bachelor’s degree dwindled to nearly 36% from the previous 48%.

Summary

The two studies which were done on Canadian-born workers and immigrants show both have nearly the same opportunities to get employed in STEM occupations. However, the level of degree an individual possess can have a considerable say in the matter. The field of study one specializes in can have a similar effect on the likelihood of getting employed. Folks with a higher level of education have more chances of landing jobs, regardless of their country of origin. Nonetheless, there will be discrepancies on the amount a foreigner with a doctoral degree would get paid compared to his Canadian-born counterpart with the same STEM certifications.
