Implemented Changes by the IRCC
Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada, however, has already implemented the changes to the FGL rule. Introduced on May 30th, 2024, the change granted Canadian citizenship to eligible foreign nationals. Applicants who opted for urgent processing were granted discretionary citizenship from the Immigration Minister, allowing them to become Canadian nationals.
These measures apply two scenarios:
- Scenario One: The applicant submitted a proof of citizenship application that will be subject to the FGL rule change and requested urgent processing, or
- Scenario Two: The application is “in process” and the IRCC determined that it’s impacted by the FGL rule. The applicant also requested urgent processing when his application wasn’t prioritized.
Benefits of Getting a Canadian Citizenship
Having a Canadian Citizenship allows you to enter, work, live, and settle in Canada as you please. You may also receive the same benefits awarded to the other citizens in the country. If you decide to have children in the future, they will also become Canadians and enjoy the same benefits which can include free schooling, in English or French, depending on where you live. Also, Canadian citizens get to vote and run for office. You may also be eligible for dual citizenship with eligible countries. Most importantly you can get a Canadian passport, which means you can visit any country that Canadian passport holders are allowed to visit.
While most permanent residents opt for Canadian citizenship, it’s not a requirement. You can choose to maintain your status as a permanent resident. However, it also means you don’t get to enjoy the rights and privileges offered to Canadian nationals.
