Types of Permits You Can Get at the Border
| Permit Type | How It Works | What to Bring |
| Employer-Specific (LMIA) | Tied to a specific employer. Requires a “Labour Market Impact Assessment.” | Job offer letter, LMIA number, proof you have the necessary job skills, possibly a Quebec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ) for employment in Quebec. |
| Employer-Specific (LMIA-Exempt) | Tied to an employer but doesn’t require an LMIA (International Mobility Program). | Job offer, Offer of Employment number from the portal and proof of exemption. |
| Open Work Permit | Allows you to work for almost anyone. Usually for refugees, spouses of students/workers or Temporary Resident Permit holders | Proof of eligibility, like refugee status or a marriage certificate |
Important Requirements to Keep in Mind
While having the necessary documentation is vital, several other factors can determine whether your application is successful.

Medical Exams and Health Clearances
You may need to have a medical exam (IME) before you travel to a POE if you:
- Plan to work in a field that involves public health, such as healthcare, childcare or education.
- Lived in certain countries for more than a six-month period in the past year and want to stay in Canada longer than six months.
- Are applying for a parent or grandparents Super Visa.
The exam should be done by an IRCC-authorized doctor, and results are typically valid for 12 months.
Biometrics Collection
Applicants often need to provide fingerprints and a photo (biometrics). Only a few POEs are set up to allow for same-day biometrics collection, and only for specific travelers. Usually, you must visit a designated collection point and complete this step before you reach the border.
Maintaining Your Legal Status
If you’re currently in Canada and have applied for a permit extension, you’re on maintained status. If you exit Canada during this period and try to return through a POE, you might lose your authorization to work until your pending application is approved.
The Bottom Line
Getting a work permit at the border might save you time, but only if you meet the specific requirements and have every required document in hand. Checking your eligibility heading to a POE is the best way to avoid being turned away.
