CREW LEADER ($31.32/H):

  • Primary duties include managing an assistant and a team of enumerators, coordinating and overseeing questionnaire collection-related activities within a designated area.
  • Those in crew leader positions need to be available 40 hours per week—this includes days, evenings, and weekends.
  • The employment period for crew leaders is March to July 2026.

Both positions include a mandatory (paid) training period. Employees can also claim authorized expenses for mileage and parking.

In addition to the above positions, there’ll also be some hiring for crew leader assistant, field operations supervisor assistant, and collection support unit operator roles.

How to Apply for a Census Job

The application process is fairly simple. Assuming you meet the eligibility requirements, all you need to do is complete the online application form before July 31st 2026. The form takes about 10 minutes to fill out. You’ll be asked to provide two references – ideally from individuals who have supervised you in previous positions.

Statistics Canada will conduct an initial screening and reference check for each applicant. If you’re applying for a supervisory position and pass this stage, they’ll also invite you to an interview. This step isn’t necessary for non-supervisory positions. However, all successful applicants will be given a security screening before being allowed to start work.

Census collection will begin as early as February 2026 for some parts of the country, so it’s a good idea to apply early to increase your chances of selection.

Census Work for CEC Program Participants

Some Census positions may qualify to be counted under Express Entry’s Canadian Experience Class program. To be counted, the work must fall under TEER 0, 1, 2 or 3, and be paid work conducted while living in Canada under a valid temporary resident status.

Enumerators can’t count their time worked towards their CEC requirements, because this job role is classed as TEER 4. Crew leaders, however, may be able to count their time worked. However, since the role is a relatively short-term one, it would not be enough to meet the requirements on it’s own. The CEC requirements allow workers to count a maximum of 30 hours per week, so a crew leader is likely to accrue about 660 hours from their job before the contract ends. The CEC requirement is 1,560 hours.
