A New Face Leading Canada’s Immigration

Another draw that wraps up an era is the last one handled by the outgoing Immigration Minister Rachel Bendayan. Lena Metlege Diab, appointed on May 13th, took over the role upon Prime Minister Mark Carney’s cabinet shuffle. With her stepping in, we can expect fresh energy and a shift in Canada’s immigration policies.

Here are some of the plans that Carney has already hinted at:

  • New permanent resident numbers will be kept in check, aiming for about 1% of the Canadian population by 2027, ensuring the immigration levels remain sustainable.
  • A boost to the number of French-speaking immigrants, even to regions outside Quebec, will support Canada’s bilingual identity and strengthen the Francophone communities.
  • Overhauling the Global Talent Stream (GTS) will aim to attract top global talent with high professional skills from around the world to Canada.
  • A reduction in the number of temporary residents, including work and study permit holders to focus on long term immigration sustainability.

More details on these proposed plans should be released in the future through Minister Diab’s official mandate letter.
