What is Express Entry?
Introduced in 2014, the Express Entry application management system was implemented to target candidates with in-demand skills. The system was also used to oversee applications from the FSTP, FSWP and the CEC.
Some factors considered for Express Entry include age, occupation, work experience and language proficiency. For each criterion, a score is assigned and added together. The sum is the overall CRS score, used to determine eligibility. The higher the applicant’s CRS score, the more likely they are to receive the Invitation to Apply for the selection draw. Applicants can participate in various Express Entry draws including the program-specific, general and category-based draws. General draws apply for all types of candidates, regardless of occupation or program.
What is Category-Based Selection?
In 2023, the IRCC introduced category-based selection draws as a way to single out Express Entry candidates with in-demand skills useful for the workforce or to strengthen the French-speaking demographic.
Below are the six possible categories to receive Invitation to Apply:
- STEM professions: Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics
- Healthcare occupations
- Transport occupations
- Trades occupations, such as plumbers, carpenters and contractors
- French-language proficiency
- Agri-food and agriculture occupations
Because the draws aren’t program-specific, it will likely need a a lower-than-average CRS score (when compared to the general draws.)
