Who Can Be Sponsored?
As the spouse that is being sponsored, you must be 18 years and legally married to the sponsoring partner. You don’t have to be legally married for a common-law partner, but you have to be at least 18years old and live with them for 12 consecutive months. It is possible to be sponsored as a conjugal rights partner. This means you are not legally married to your partner but must have been in a relationship with them for at least a year. You also must also be at least 18 years and living out of Canada, but because of legal and immigration restrictions cannot live with your partner in your country.
How to Apply for Sponsorship
Your partner needs to make two applications for you with IRCC; the sponsorship application and the permanent residence application. The two have to be submitted at the same time. Your partner is expected to pay the application fees, such as the processing fees and biometrics fee. The payments can be done online on IRRC’s website.
The final step is to submit the applications by mail to IRCC. Once the application is successful, you are expected to continue fulfilling certain obligations as a couple.
Obligations After Applying for Sponsorship
One obligation that your sponsor needs to fulfill is to be responsible for you for three years. As a sponsored person, you cannot sponsor any other person for five years after being sponsored. Good luck as you look forward to living in Canada!
