What’s an ITA?

Every few weeks, Canada sends those with the highest CRS scores an Invitation to Apply, which allows you to apply for a permanent residency. This application is only valid for two months, so you’ll want to get started right away. During this process, you may be asked to provide biometric information, provide additional documentation, or have an interview scheduled. Unfortunately due to COVID-19, it might take a little longer to get your application processed, although the average time before the pandemic was about 6 months. If you get approved, you’ll receive a COPR in the mail.

What’s a COPR?

A COPR is your Confirmation of Permanent Residence, although it’s not the final step in the process. If you’re already in Canada when you receive this, you’ll either have to schedule an appointment with an IRCC office or go to a port of entry for an interview with an official. This is just to finalize everything and make sure that all your documentation is in order.

If you’re outside of Canada, things are a little trickier. You’ll need to download a mobile app, ArriveCAN, and submit your documentation, like your passport and COPR, on it. After arriving in Canada, you’ll have to speak to an officer of the Canada Border Services Agency for a short interview. As long as all your information is correct, you’ll be well on your way to becoming a Canadian!
