Canada’s Tech Talent Strategy
On June 27, 2023, the IRCC announced they needed to attract global tech talent to Canada because the technology sector is crucial to the country’s economy. This is why they implemented the tech talent strategy to ensure they attract more than just digital nomads. The new strategy to attract tech talent to Canada included several measures such as the new innovation stream which is under IMP or International Mobility Program. This was planned last year but it hasn’t been announced yet.
The IRCC clarified that the innovation stream will be exempted from the Labour Market Impact Assessment process to attract more tech workers in Canada. The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada also introduced a work permit for H1-B specialty occupation visa holders.
They have already reached their cap of 10,000 permits last year but the organization is thinking of improving their Global Skills Strategy program to attract more tech talents. In the improved program, employers that will hire foreign workers in the tech sector can expedite their LMIA processing, which is a document required to hire a foreign worker.
