Impacts of the New Changes to Canadian Employers

As a Canadian employer here’s how the new changes will affect you:

  • Less appeal on LMIA-backed job offers: Foreign candidates might be less attracted to LMIA-backed job offers as they no longer enhance CRS scores.
  • More monitoring by the immigration authorities: Poorly documented or suspicious job offers may face more scrutiny and delays or refusal for non-compliance.
  • Look elsewhere: As an employer you may need to look into other immigration pathways like TFWP or PNPs to get your desired workers PR.
  • Brand yourself: To get the right candidate, you may need to offer a competitive salary, career development or training.

Adapting to the New CRS System Changes

With the CRS system changes, candidates must boost their scores by:

  • Improving language test results (IELTS, CELPIP)
  • Gaining working experience
  • Obtaining Canadian education or credential recognition.

Employers should also seek other immigration pathways such as PNPs which offer a direct path to an ITA. Although the removal of additional CRS points makes the Express Entry Pool more balanced and fair, it may cause higher CRS cut-off scores as the system adjust. This will further cause competition among the applicants meaning that the candidates will rely more on the above core credentials. Finally, removal of CRR points not only helps fight fraud but also supports the IRCC’s shift towards issuing ITAs based on key occupational categories such as healthcare and STEM fields rather than job offers.
