Why is this needed?
Worker shortage is not a recent issue in the agricultural field in Canada. Fruit picking, meat processing, and handling seafood, among others, are essential job openings that typically remain open. It is anticipated that the new stream will help Canada pursue its economic objectives while also filling useful positions in the food supply chain.
This new program can also be related to the recent shutdown of the Agri-food Pilot. In 2020, a pilot program was introduced, providing a pathway to permanent residency in major occupations related to food and food production for foreign workers. It involved positions in meat production, animal rearing, and greenhouse activities. Nevertheless, the Agri-Food Pilot officially ceased to accept new applications as of February 13, 2025, when it reached its quota set for the year. Many would have wanted it to be a permanent program, but like most pilot projects in Canada, it had a five-year limit.
You can expect more updates in the coming months. If you or a relative is interested in labor opportunities in the fields of fish processing or agriculture in Canada, this new stream will be a significant step forward.
