Six Reasons Why Immigrant Are Performing Better
The report also outlined the factors that contributed to significant performance improvement for immigrant workers;
- More immigrants had access to university education
- The strong labour market in the 2010s benefited immigrant workers more than it did Canadian-born citizens
- Provincial and Federal programs aim to improve the livelihoods of immigrants
- Foreign credential recognition has likely improved
- Support services had likely enhanced their integration into the labor market
- Immigrants could better prepare for jobs thanks to the improved labor market information
Room for Improvement
Aside from the improvement in performance, we cannot ignore the fact that immigrant wages were significantly still low. The report pointed two main reasons for this; discrimination and language barriers.
Another factor to consider is immigrant workers’ smaller social networks. This likely resulted in job mismatching because most immigrants took what they could get.
As a result, talented workers might have ended up in fields they’re not specialized in. Since immigrant workers now had access to University education, an ideal situation would be working in a field related to their studies, but this was not always the case.
This would explain why immigrant workers earned less when they were better equipped than Canadian-born citizens.
Wrapping Up
There is no doubt that Canada goes above and beyond in ensuring its immigrants can lead a comfortable lifestyle. This report I clear evidence that the federal and provincial programs put in place for immigrants are bearing fruit. Of course, there is still something that needs to be done about the high unemployment rate as well as the significant wage difference between them and Canadian-born workers. There is definitely room for improvement, and we hope to see a change soon.
