The Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP) is shaking up the job application filing for immigrants. Initially, foreign nationals handled the job application process on their own. However, recent changes in Ontario’s immigration system have put power into employers’ hands. The OINP has announced that starting July 2, foreign nationals can’t apply directly to the Employer Job Offer programs. Instead, employers must initiate the process on behalf of any candidates.
So what does this mean for anyone who wants to apply?
Key Updates
Ontario is rolling out its latest Employer Portal, which changes the model from applicant-centered to employer-led.
Rather than the applicant using the portal, employers must submit job offer information to the OINP before candidates can file their Expression of Interest (EOI).
Applicants who’ve recently submitted their EOIs must reapply by asking their employer to file for them because their current profiles will expire.
How the Process Worked Originally
Previously, foreign nationals completed an EOI through one of the Employer Job Offer pathways, i.e., Foreign Worker, International Student, or In-Demand Skills.
Once the OINP received the application, the organization contacted the employer and requested that they complete the employer form, also known as the Application for Approval of an Employment Position.
The OINP then assessed the completed application and determined if the candidate was eligible for a nomination. Next, the candidate received notification of their application status.
Streams Impacted by the Changes
In case you’re wondering if you’ll be affected, only some immigrants will feel the effects of these changes, including applicants applying using the following channels:
- Foreign Worker
- International Student
- In-Demand Skills
