According to Global Talent’s surveillance, Canada has surpassed the United States as the most attractive nation for foreign workers. The survey, conducted by the Boston Consulting Group, in conjunction with The Network, captured 290,000 individuals across 190 nations.
The report indicated that the coronavirus pandemic had a huge impact on people’s preferences when considering where to work. There was a significant decrease in the number of people wanting to work overseas. Only half (50%) of the sample population showed a willingness to work abroad. That was between October and December 2020. That suggests a declining trend because, in 2018 and 2014, the number stood at 57% and 64%, respectively.
COVID-19 Impact on Country Ranking
The approach that countries took to curb the spread of COVID-19 also affected destination ranking. Countries that appeared to contain the pandemic well featured in the top 10 list. They included Singapore, New Zealand, Japan, and Australia. Other popular destinations, such as Germany and France, fell two positions, while Italy and France failed to make it to the list.
That said, major cities within these countries that had previously attracted foreign workers became less appealing. They include New York, Barcelona, Rome, and Madrid. Less popular cities that handled the pandemic well continued to gain ground. They include Tokyo, Singapore, Abu Dhabi, and Dubai.
Overall, Canada emerged on top, especially among the skilled-class workers who had masters who had masters’ and doctorate certificates, workers with experience in the digital industry, and those below the age of 30 years.
